Maz Quinn (GIs) has continued to lead from the front for the Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team at the 2008 ISA World Surfing Games after placing second in qualifying round 3.  Quinn moves through to the last 16 surfers in the qualifying round which is stacked with talent from Australia, Brazil, USA, Venezuela, Tahiti and Costa Rica.  Apart from Quinn the New Zealand team was subjected to another day of mixed results with both female surfers and Luke Cederman (Rag) being relegated to the repercharge rounds in the small 1.0m waves.

The 2008 ISA World Surfing Games are currently being held at Costa Da Caparica, Portugal.  The prestigious biennial event known as the Olympics of surfing takes place from the 11th – 19th of October.

Up against 2001 world champion CJ Hobgood (USA), Quinn went ‘wave for wave’ completing huge power gauges to rack up a score of 13.63 points compared with Hobgood’s 14.43.  Together the two surfers relegated Charly Martin (FRA) and Klee Strachan (ZAF) to the repercharge rounds.

“Turn for turn Maz was the equal of any surfer out there today” commented New Zealand coach Cory Scott.  “At this stage of the event the level of surfing is so high that it comes down to who gets the best waves.  That is what Maz will need to concentrate on in the coming rounds” added Scott after being asked about Quinn’s chances of reaching the podium.

Quinn now faces World Tour surfer Kai Otten (AUS), Dillon Perillo (USA) and Heath Joske (AUS) in qualifying round 4.

Luke Cederman (Rag) placed fourth in qualifying round 3 after teenage Tahitian surfer Tamaroa McComb blew away his opponents with an 18.17 scoreline – the highest of the event to date.  World Tour surfer Ben Bourgeois (USA) also progressed through the heat.  Cederman will now contest the repercharge rounds.

Zennor Wernham (Rag) was a standout in his repercharge heat scoring 15.33 to easily move through to the second round.  Wernham posted scores of 8.33 and 7.0 for his best two waves and will need to find the same form to progress through rounds two and three tonight.

A disappointed Leon Santorik (Rag) was the first Quiksilver New Zealand team member to be eliminated from the event after he lost a close heat in repercharge round one.

Jessica Santorik (Rag) and Daisy Thomas (Chch) both surfed two heats in the women’s division today.  While Santorik lost her first heat she progressed through her repercharge round scoring 11.0 points to win her heat.  On the other hand Daisy Thomas placed second in her first heat but then fourth in her second heat.  Coincidentally, despite the different routes the girls have taken, they find themselves pitted against one another in repercharge round two next time they hit the water.  They will face Easkey Britton (IRE) and Sonja Honsch (GER).
