Jay Quinn (Gis) continues to lead by example for Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team in Costa Rica after day three of the 2009 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games. Quinn moved through to the final 16 surfers in the qualifying rounds today after a second placing in his round 3 heat. Quinn was accompanied by excellent performances from team mates Daisy Thomas (Chch) and Laura Rishworth (Mnt) in the Women’s Division and a tight progression by Gauranga Ormond (WGM) late in the day in the repercharge of the Open Men’s Division.
The surf at Hermosa Beach remained in the 1.0m – 1.2m range with light winds. The changing tides affected conditions throughout the day with some excellent conditions on offer at times.
Quinn and Matt Hewitt (Mnt) were both contesting the third round of the Open Men’s Division today. Quinn came out on the winning side of a particularly tight heat while Hewitt came out on the losing side of his relegating him to the repecharge rounds.
Quinn placed second to Carlos Cabrero (PRI) who posted a winning total of 14.17 out of a possible 20. Quinn scored a 9.66 heat total compared with third placed Tahitian surfer Herimoana Luciani who scored 9.63.
The patience of Quinn was the telling factor after only surfing a total of three waves in his heat in the search for the best waves that were on offer.
Quinn now faces off against Joel Centio (Haw), Dayyan Neve (AUS) and Gabriel Medina (BRZ) in qualifying round 4. The match up will be tough with Neve being a World Tour surfer currently ranked 30th and Medina recently winning an ASP World Qualifying Series event becoming the youngest surfer in history to win such an event at the age of 15. Quinn will contest his heat on Friday (NZT) when the swell is forecast to build significantly offering up some excellent surf conditions.
Hewitt placed third in his heat today with a 12.23 score line compared to his World Tour competitor Neve who posted 13.36 and eventual heat winner Austin Ware (USA) who posted 15.23. Hewitt struggled to find the good waves in the heat but did land one big aerial manoeuvre in the heat to impress the judges. Hewitt will now contest the repecharge rounds alongside fellow team mate Gauranga Ormond.
In the last heat of the day, Ormond scrapped his way to a second placing to move through to Repecharge Round 3. Ormond had a seesaw battle with Jaun Carlos Lombardi (CHI) which included tough paddle battles and lows scores before Ormond edged out his opponent 7.93 to 7.67. World Tour surfer Roy Powers (HAW) ran away with the heat win.
Earlier in the day Luke Hughes (Rag) became New Zealand’s first casualty at the event losing in the dying seconds of his heat. Hughes held down second place for much of the heat before being pushed back into third in the last 10 seconds of the heat. Hughes finished the event placed 65th overall.
Laura Rishworth and Daisy Thomas both had a highly successful day of competition progressing through two rounds of the event. Their first heats netted 13.75 and 13.25 respectively for comfortable heat wins. Their second heats netted second placings with the two surfers scoring 9.20 and 7.25 respectively.
Rishworth progressed alongside current world number 9 Samantha Cornish (AUS) together eliminating surfers from Japan and Puerto Rico. Thomas placed second behind Venezuelan surfer Yocelyn Aldana together eliminating Nicole Morgan (IRE) and Marianne Lombardi (CHI).
Day four is likely to see Matt Hewitt, Gauranga Ormond, Daisy Thomas and Laura Rishworth competing. Jay Quinn by way of his second placing today will get two days off and will compete on Friday (NZT). Daniel Procter and Thomas Kibblewhite will contest the Longboard Division starting Thursday (NZT).
