Quinn Extends Vast Ratings Lead |

After winning back to back SOL Surf Series events, Gisborne’s Jay Quinn has extended a vast ratings lead over his opponents with four events remaining this summer. Meanwhile the Women’s ratings have somewhat of a log jam at the top led by Jessica Santorik (Raglan).
Quinn holds a lead of over 1000 points from his nearest rivals both of Gisborne, Blair Stewart and Jay’s older brother Maz.
“It is pretty good to get out to such a lead, I am pretty happy about it” said Quinn. “I have only got the Whangamata event left as I am missing the Raglan event due to a wedding on the Gold Coast, those two events with the six star ratings are the ones that matter most” added Quinn in reference to the Billabong Pro next weekend and the Rip Curl Pro at Raglan on the 11th – 13th March.
Despite the favourites tag, Quinn does not expect any more pressure at the next event of the SOL Surf Series opting to focus on his performance instead. “I just need to keep performing like I have been and hopefully I can walk away with another win.”
The SOL Surf Series is only a third of the way through the summer programme. However, the strong performance of Quinn so far this summer bodes well for the rest of the year, both in New Zealand and abroad on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour.
Quinn who has been based in Australia up until late in 2010 has never really had a chance to challenge for series win in New Zealand. He is hoping that this exceptional start to the year will allow him that opportunity despite missing some of the key events and his primary focus being on the ASP World Tour.
“It will be hard to win. I have never had that opportunity before but these two wins off the bat give me a chance at least” said Quinn.
Quinn leads a group of five Gisborne surfers inside the qualifying top 16 surfers.
Tim O’Connor is the top rated surfer from the Bay of Plenty in fourth place closely followed by Alex Dive in seventh and Nick White in ninth.
Taranaki’s hopes rest with two surfers inside the top sixteen, Keone Campbell sitting in fifth place and Jarred Hancox in eighth place.
Raglan surfers occupy four of the sixteen top slots however the highest rated surfer is Leon Santorik at tenth.
For the first time in six years, Hawkes Bay features inside the top sixteen with Tyler Lawson currently ranked twelfth.
The top six on the women’s ratings are split two a piece between Raglan, Whangamata and Auckland.
Jessica Santorik holds down the familiar number one spot, a place she has occupied at year-end for five of the past six years. However, this year she has been pushed in the first two events by the youngsters coming through the ranks and also the return on Airini Mason who won the Hyundai National Champs last week.
“It is different now that Airini is back, she was always better than everyone else” said Santorik in reference to a possible seventh series victory.
Despite Santorik’s third placing at the National Champs, she was upbeat pointing out that for the past few years she has not even made the final. “I surfed well enough, I just didn’t get the waves in the final and I really only needed to find one more good section on my last wave to challenge for the win.”
Santorik is another surfer whose attention is on the ASP World Tour however she will be in New Zealand right through summer with only one women’s event being contested in the Australasia region and that event not taking place until April.
Santorik’s closest rivals on the SOL Surf Series are two Whangamata surfers in Ella Williams and Grace Spiers who are close enough that if they beat Santorik by one or two placings at the next event, they will find themselves atop the ratings.
The winner of each of the first five SOL Surf Series events receive direct entry into the Super 16 as will the top rated surfer on the South Island Circuit. Jay Quinn is the only surfer to receive this wildcard. This means that the cut off point at the top of the ratings will float between 11th and 15th depending on who wins events throughout the summer.
