The NZ Schools Surfing Championships were held on the 17th and 18th of August. With over 150 surfers competing, it was an action packed two days at Manu Bay run by the Raglan Area School Surfing Academy students.
The Surfing Academy students were not allowed to compete as they were busy achieving NCEA credits for Event Management. They worked tirelessly to run what is turning out to be one of the biggest junior events on the NZ calendar. They secured great sponsorship and were given heaps of products to dish out to competitors and spectators from RIP CURL, VOLCOM, REEF, ROXY and BACKDOOR.
Day one was held in fun 1-3 foot surf. Day 2 was a total contrast with wild weather and huge surf. To the grommets credit they got out there and pushed themselves in the heavy and testing conditions. There were some great wipeouts, snapped boards and a few minor cuts and scrapes.
Specialist awards and trophies were awarded to Kayden Mayes from Mount Maunganui College for “The Best Newcomer Performance” . The young Mounty made a real impression with some radical surfing all the way to his first major final.
Top Under 16 seed Adam Grimson from Gisborne Boys who has finished first in the last 2 years in the 14s and 16s just missed out on his third final. However he received the prestigious “Best Cockroach” award , for the longest and best cockroach manouever. Special note must be given to Adam who unselfishly paddled out to help rescue the board of Mac Christie who had broken his legrope even though Adam had just finished his quarter final heat and had his semifinal coming up.
Todd Doyle was another winner for the highest heat score of the competition. He scored the only perfect 10 and backed it up with another 8 point ride.
Mimiwhangata’s Paul Moretti was another standout and won the “Most Innovative Manouever” award as well as placing 3rd in the Under 16s.
Congratulations to Jules Craft who not only made his second consecutive final at this event, scored a few spot prizes but won the major prize of a brand new Spyder Surfboard and board bag sponsored by BACKDOOR.
Once again Whangamata Area School displayed their dominance by taking out the winning school by a convincing margin. In second equal was Gisborne Boys and Mount Maunganui College and getting fourth was Tauranga Boys High School.
