The second of three Rangatahi Development Camps took place at Whaingaroa on the 21-22 August. Fifteen of New Zealand's top young Maori surfers attended the two day camp.
The camp was facilitated by Surfing New Zealand Development Officer Lee Ryan who took the grommets through a bunch of theory at Poihakena Marae. Lee was accompanied by Daniel Procter who brought his competitive expertise to the table as well as his wealth of cultural knowledge. Daniel Kereopa made a guest appearance and took questions from the grommets throughout Saturday. Steve Ria was also present to oversee the weekend.
The surf was good for the practical side of the weekend with nice 1.0m waves at Manu Bay on both Saturday and Sunday. The groms invaded the line up both days with the Waitara boys in particular taking a big liking to the long lefthanders.
The weekend was filled with some big feeds at the Marae and also several practice runs with the new haka.
