Seventh For Hareb Helps New Zealand To Ninth Place
Written by Ben Kennings
Sunday, 03 July 2011
Paige Hareb has finished seventh at the 2011 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games helping the Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team to retain ninth place on the last day of the event held in Panama.

Hareb had hoped to progress through to the final and better her silver medal performance from 2010 but fell short early on the final day of the event placing third in a closely fought heat.

The surf remained around the 1.0m mark for the final day with some good set waves but also big lulls that played havoc with surfer’s performances often catching competitors out of position as they jostled for waves between themselves.

Hareb got off to a slow start in her heat and had to play catch up from the outset.  As the heat progressed Hareb picked up scores of 6.13 and 4.20 but required a 5.95 point ride to progress at the end of the heat.  French surfer Alize Arnaud won the heat followed by Brazilian Silvana Lima.

All the other girls caught their first waves before me and then there was nothing. Silvana (Lima) was ripping but it was close between the other three of us” commented Hareb.  “I mean, I only ended up needing a high five point ride or something and I couldn't even get that! That's how inconsistent the waves were” added Hareb.

The seventh placing was the highest of the Quiksilver New Zealand Team but despite the top placing Hareb feels that she should have performed better.

“At these ISA events I definitely would rather a first or nothing since I got second last year but I am happy with or without the result.”

Hareb now switches focus to the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour where she will head to France and compete in the penultimate event of the year followed by the final event at Huntington Beach, California in four weeks time.
