South Island Grom Series Event 2
Written by SISA
Friday, 08 February 2013
Event two of the South Island Grom Series brought us to Gore bay in North Canterbury, this idyllic tranquil hide away normally produces calm sheltered conditions and well away from the hustle and bustle of the local town beaches.

However, a committed bunch of competitors and spectators a like were met with 1 metre of howling onshore north east swell packing whitecaps and inconsistent waves for all.

These conditions were really going to test the patience and commitment of competitors, spectators and officials to keep the contest machine grinding away!

First up were the Under 17 Boys, with standouts in the first round heats being Harrison Whiteside, Max Marshall and Nick Tuhikarama all leaving their fellow competitors chasing combinations to take first round honours.  Semi-finals saw consistency from the first round winners with the inclusion of Moss Thompson, Rory Edmonds and Connor Mclennan who also managed well in the conditions to make the step up to a finals berth.

Conditions for the final were a bit of a lucky dip, being in the right place at the right time was everything.  Harrison Whiteside shot out of the blocks within the first minute snatching a good scoring ride leaving all the others chasing shifting peaks and trying to maintain their position.  Rory Edmonds struck back with a good score leaving Max Marshall and Nick Tuhikarama playing catch-up mid-way through the final. Both Max and Nick picked up a good score each leaving all competitors in reach of top honours. It was Harrison who maintained his composure under pressure with only a 2 point spread between 1st and 4th
place.

With only one Under 17 competitor the Under 14 and Under 17 Girls were combined, the girls did the hard yards with the conditions deteriorating and the tide and wind creating a nice rip which made the Girls work hard to maintain their composure.

It was new comer Gabrielle Paul, who found a nice inside wave performing a combination of manoeuvres to show her intentions, with Georgia Wederell and Siobhan Jayes chasing hot on her heels. Frith Davis and Gina Damerow-Stephen new to the competition scene surfed well for the unfavourable conditions both securing waves to keep them in touch with the top 3.

In the Under 14 Boys Final it was a wave fest with the Groms attacking anything that resembled a wave but, it was the cool head of Sam Sands that prevailed getting a clear combination over the other
competitors leaving the remaining three chasing that 2nd place spot Liam Wright snuck past Connor Mclennan in the last minute to take it by only 0.30 leaving Zak Van Eekelen in 4th.  Zak had only had surgical wires taken out of his hand the day before, and the fitness and pain after competing under 12 boys final took its toll lasting only a couple of minutes in this final.

With the Under 12 Girls final it was a real clash of the heavy weights with a stacked field of competent girls chasing top honours in event 2 but, the conditions were a real leveller.

The mature consistency of Siobhan Jayes paid off with a couple of solid scores leaving the others chasing those scoring waves which were far and few between. Tegen Bishop feared well chasing

the top spot but fell short by only 1 point, with another newcomer Katie Stewart who remained patient and took what was on offer and was enough to grab the 3rd spot.  Georgia Wederell and the other new comer and eventual winner of the under 14 Girls Gabrielle Paul struggled to find their usual good form in the conditions they and finished 4th and 5th respectively.

The Under 12 Boys final saw a return to the water for Zack Van Eekelen whom had been out of the water for six weeks with an operation on his hand obviously in pain Zack took control of the top spot with
his combination of waves but, fitness, pain and conditions let Cameron Wright and Jake Jayes have a sniff but both, just fell short by 0.50 leaving Cameron in 2nd and Jake 3rd. Luca Winkleman did well catching the most waves in the final but, never got the opportunity to link any of his manoeuvres but, managed well in the conditions to take 4th place.

With two events down and the third and final event being held in Kaikoura on the 16th/17th February it will give the Groms another trip around the South Island and hopefully some more memorable waves.

A big thanks to Northside Boardriders for hosting the event, ExitSurf, The Parents, Surfing New Zealand and South Island Surfing Association.
