Event two of the three event South Island Grom Series is set to kick off on Saturday at Waikuku Beach in North Canterbury. The South Island Grom Series aims to attract young surfers from throughout the South Island. Waikuku Beach situated 20km north of Christchurch, can offer up nice “A” frame peaks for the Groms to stamp their mark on.
Surfing New Zealand together with the South Island Surfing Association initiated the three-event South Island Grom Series in 2008 and this year the series is planned to take place in the South Island during November and December and January this summer.
The events will take place in Dunedin and Christchurch targeting surfers under the age of 16 with five separate divisions contested at each event – Under 16, 14 for both males and females and a combined Under 12 division.
The new series of events has been developed to grow the base of junior surfers in the South Island. The events will also provide a platform for the South Island’s top junior surfers to advance their competitive skills with other surfers of a similar age before going on to test themselves at a national level. Already this has proved a case in point with several of the Under 16 competitors (boys and girls) having just returned from the Rip Curl Grom Search in Piha, with Sam Courtney, from host club Northside, making it to the semi finals of the Under 16 Boys. Courtney will be out to peg back current points leader Cody McCusker’s lead, after McCusker took out the first event held at Te Oka Bay in November.
The South Island Surfing Association is also holding surfing workshops based around the events. The workshops will aim to educate surfers on technical aspects of high performance surfing and the competition environment. This is an opportunity for surfers, coaches and their parents to ask any questions they may have. Mark Perana will be there to answer questions and give advice, in an informal setting. The workshop will be held on Sunday 13th December at 9.30am at the Northside Boardriders Clubrooms at Pines Beach (the old surfclub).
All competitors to meet: Saturday 7.30am at Waikuku Beach Surf Club car park, Christchurch. If waves unsuitable please be prepared for a mobile event.
The second “South Island Grom Series” event is proudly brought to you by Surfing New Zealand, South Island Surfing Association and Northside Boardriders.
The series will conclude with the third and final event at St Clair Beach in Dunedin on 30th January 2010.
