The 2010 South Island Junior Winter Surfing Festival presented by Joyce & Co was one out of the box. As the grey skies brightened at 7 o’clock last Saturday morning, the waiting competitors and spectators started to hoot and cheer to the sight of perfect 1 to 1 & a half meter surf.
The contest started with some great surfing from the under 14’s with the eventual winner, Harrison Whiteside relishing the conditions. Whiteside was not challenged until final. His second scoring wave made the difference between the rest of the finalists.
The Cadets (under 17 men’s) division was an extremely close fought division. Ther were some very tightly fought heats right through to the final where Kaiapoi’s Cody McCusker was able to finish 3 points ahead of the other finalists who were all inside a one point spread.
The Women’s final was again a battle between Sumner’s Kristi Zarifeh & Alethea Lock the two women were separated by 0.13 points at the end of the 20 minute final. Zarifeh took the win, it also gave her the win in the junior women’s division on the South Island Circuit with one event still to go.
The Junior Men’s (under 20) division saw some surprise face’s show up that haven’t been seen on the South Island Circuit over the last 8 months. Ike Hanson & Christo Gildert put on some very polished performance’s to make the final where they had a very tight battle with Sam Courtney & Dual finalist Cody McCusker. When the hooter sounded at the end of the heat there was a one point spread from 1st to 3rd. The win went to Courtney followed by Hanson, & McCusker respectively.
Courtney’s win almost certainly guarantees him the Junior title on the South Island Circuit for this year.
