The groms post heat - Image SISA

This weekend saw the first of three events on the South Island Surf Grm Series held at North New BrightonBeach and hosted by North Wai Boardriders. With thirty entries the groms were frothing to get out in amongst the 0.5 metre clean waves that were on offer.

In the Under 12 Boys Zak van Ekeden showed a solid combination of manoeuvres to comfortably leave the other competitors chasing the minor placings.

It was a great day for double finalist Samuel Sands who’s first scoring ride in the Under 14 Boys final cemented a solid platform that was never threatened for the rest of the heat.  Sands also placed fourth in the Under 17 Boys Division.

Another double finalist Jack Wilson also showed his future promise as a rising grom placing second in the Under 14 Boys and third in the Under 17 Boys.

Dunedin Surfer Xavier Campbell was as a major threat in his divisions but didn’t get the opportunity to display his usual consistent repertoire, finding the Christchurch conditions a bit lacking compared to his usual home break quality with the sole Dunedin contestant finishing third in the Under 14 Boys Division.

For the girls it was triple finalist Siobhan Jayes who surfed up a storm by entering the Under 12 Boys, Under 14 Girls and Under 12 Girls showing great stamina throughout the event.

In the Under 12 Girls final Bella Wilson was triumphant in the testing conditions towards the end of the day winning over Siobhan Jayes.

Katie Nicolson kept Siobhan at bay to take first place honours in the Under 14 Girls Division.

Ella Sandford and Aliscia Whitfield went head to head in the final of the Under 17 Girls with Ella Sandford taking out the title.

In the battle of the heavy weights it was a powerful display in the small conditions.  Rory Edmonds and Harrison Whiteside went wave for wave until the final hooter with Edmonds coming out on top. There were also commendable performances by Jack Wilson and Samuel Sands who finished third and fourth respectively.

This was event one of the 3 Event Series. The next event will be held at Tauranga Bay, Westport on the 10^th December.
