Strategic Challenges and Outcomes
1. ONGOING DELIVERY OF QUALITY EVENTS
Situation
Events are the core business of Surfing NZ. Events provide a service to the surfing community. They generate revenue for Surfing New Zealand. Events also raise the profile of surfing through media and the viewing public.
Strategic Challenge
Deliver first-rate events that meet the requirements of our stakeholders.
2. TALENT DEVELOPMENT PATHWAYS THAT PRODUCE WORLD CHAMPIONS
Situation
Surfing NZ does not have a comprehensive approach that identifies talented athletes and develops them through talent development pathways.
Strategic Challenge
To implement a high performance programme that delivers results and produces world champions
3. EDUCATION PROGRAMMES AND PATHWAYS
Situation
Surfing New Zealand delivers coaching and judging accreditation courses. These courses provide qualified accredited officials which form the backbone for the development of the sport.
Strategic Challenge
Strengthen education programmes and pathways to support athlete development, events and international compatibility.
4. EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Situation
The sport of surfing continues to grow, creating an increasingly complex National Sporting Organisation that requires effective governance and management practices. Resource capacity and capability remains an issue.
Strategic Challenge
Increasing stakeholder expectations require the provision of strong leadership and the development of effective governance and management practices at all levels.
5. FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY
Situation
Surfing New Zealand operates fiscally on an annual basis. This restricts long term planning and the ability for surfing to reach it’s full strategic potential.
Strategic Challenge
Surfing New Zealand must develop a financially sustainable organisation that has sufficient revenue to overcome the challenges outlined in this plan including establishing reserves that ensure business sustainability.
6. EFFECTIVE STAKEHOLDER RELATIONSHIPS
Situation
There is a lack of clarity around the respective roles and expectations of Surfing New Zealand and its stakeholders. Surfing NZ has an increasingly significant role in the alignment of the sport. Surfing New Zealand also has an important role to play in advocacy and it’s ability to influence government and non-government agencies, local and territorial authorities
Strategic Challenge
Ensure that all stakeholders are identified, engaged and connect with the strategic direction of Surfing New Zealand and the services provided.
7. COMMUNITY LEVEL DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY
Situation
The surfing community as a whole has limited capacity and capability to promote surfing and deliver services and programmes. Boardrider Club membership is extremely low and resources (time/volunteers/equipment) scarce.
Strategic Challenge
The future viability of Surfing in New Zealand requires healthy and vibrant surfing communities delivering quality services and programmes.
