The Auckland Region Scholastics Surfing Champs got underway on Sunday 19th at Forestry. Initially scheduled for Piha the adverse forecast
of 6-8 ft and onshore nor-west winds made the prospect of 3-4 ft cross shores
out east far more appealing...and it didn’t disappoint!
“See there are benefits of being a surfer in Auckland” commented several frothing groms. “We surfed glassy chest high Taka yesterday, Maori Bay
on Friday and now this!!”
A big draw of kids from schools all over the Auckland region enjoyed an awesome day of
waves right through the tides. Sue and a
gaggle of mum’s and kids kept the beach fed with their delicious BBQ and baking.
It seemed we squeezed one last day out
of summer (well almost) with people swimming, some without wetties and the sun
trying its best to shine through.
Head judge Gavin Bisman was stoked to see so many kids participate at this
event that he doesn’t see at the national comps he attends - it bodes well for
the future of surfing in the Auckland
region.
Special thanks to Quiksilver for the awesome prize packs, Gavin and Kiwisurf ,
Barry for tabulation and draw control, Craig for Risk Management and the
judging roster, Wildcoast Board Riders Club and all the parents and teachers
who got the kids to the beach safely.
A great team effort and a great bunch of keen kids
