Surfing New Zealand delivered a Level 1 Surf Instructors Course in Mount Maunganui over the weekend of the 1st -2nd May 2010. The course is accredited by the International Surfing Association (ISA) and is the minimum requirement needed to teach surfing on NZ beaches. Fourteen surfers from around the North Island attended the course presented by SNZ Development Officer Lee Ryan.
The students lucked in to the end of a four day east coast swell which had ideal 2-3ft offshore conditions for the surfing ability assessment. Sunday saw the swell drop to 1-2ft which was a welcome relief for some as they undertook the grueling 200m run/swim/run fitness test and board rescues - all part of the new Community Lifesaving Award for Surf Coaches - a joint venture between SNZ and Surf Lifesaving NZ to teach basic rescue techniques to surf instructors.
While a number of the students will be using their new qualification to escape the winter in NZ and seek work overseas a large majority will be taking the skills they have learnt back to their local boardriders clubs to help their junior development programs.
