Surfing New Zealand is heading south to the isolated West Coast region this week to deliver two surf education programs to the local surfers through the Kahuna Boardriders Club at Greymouth.
Surfing New Zealand Development Manager Lee Ryan will be delivering International
Surfing Association (ISA) accredited surf instructors and judging courses.
The local Kahuna Boardriders club are excited about the opportunity to up-skill
their members this weekend and have the courses held down at Greymouth.
“We have run informal learn to surf activities in the past. However these have been without qualified
instructors and in a somewhat piecemeal fashion with not a lot of direction”
commented Kahuna Boardriders spokesperson Robbie Barrow.
“There are always waves here but we are always looking for someone to surf with
so we see these courses as a way of helping build a sound base of surfers to experience
with us, one of the most amazing resources that sit right on the door step of
our town – the ocean” Barrow added.
Over thirty participants will attend the three days of courses, some coming
from as far away as Invercargill so the local surfers will also be showcasing
their beautiful coastline.
Surfing New Zealand Development Manager Lee Ryan is looking forward to taking
the courses south and working with the local boardriders.
“The courses offer an excellent way to help develop surfers. The surf instructors course teaches people to
deliver surfing lessons to beginners and therefore promote the sport” Ryan
said.
The judging course is another aspect that will help the local boardriders clubs
with the delivery of their events ensuring that their volunteers are qualified
to a national standard.
The two courses hold international accreditation. This gives any participants the ability to
coach or judge around the world should they wish to further develop their
skills in this area.
Barrow simply wants to give people the tools to pass on the passion for the
ocean that he and other surfers have. “Surfing
provides that thrill that so many of our young generation seek. We want to give youth the opportunity to
experience that thrill.”
Over 80 participants will have attended the ISA Level 1 Surf Instructors
Courses throughout New
Zealand in 2012.
The proliferation of surf schools around the New Zealand coastline will ensure
that those new to the sport will be getting the best possible introduction to
the surfing environment.
