The Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team put in a spirited effort in the Aloha Cup Tag Team event early this morning but came up short of making the final finishing fourth in their heat.
The tag team event was held in clean but soft 1.0m waves on the penultimate day
of the 2011 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games in Panama.
The New Zealand Team comprising the Wallis brothers Zen and Tane along with Ben
Poulter (Rag), JC Susan (Mnt) and Paige Hareb (Tara)
remained in the hunt throughout the hour long battle often leading the heat.
Tane Wallis got the team off to a good start scoring the team’s highest ride of
6.43 out of a possible 10 points amongst his three waves. Tane was followed by his brother Zen then JC
Susan, Ben Poulter and the performance being rounded out by Paige Hareb.
The ever-potent force of the Australian Team always looked ominous and once
they caught up to the New
Zealand wave tally they pushed well ahead
taking first place with ease.

The South African Team held some big scores early but fell behind the required
wave count. It was only through some good
tactical surfing from their last surfers that saw them catch up and push past
the Kiwis and finish within the allotted time period to avoid a points penalty
and elimination.
The Americans pushed hard toward the end also, ultimately dumping the Kiwis
down into fourth with Paige Hareb unable to bring the team back into contention
despite two good waves to finish the heat.
Earlier in the day Paige Hareb’s Repechage Round 7 opponents were determined
after the final heat of Repechage Round 6 was contested. Hareb’s heat will be a tough battle against
Nikita Robb (ZAF) who she defeated on day five along with Silvana Lima (BRA),
the only surfer to have scored a perfect ten at the event, and Alize Arnaud
(FRA).
Hareb needs to progress through two heats to make it to the final of the event
and challenge for New Zealand’s first ever gold medal at the ISA World Surfing
Games.
Action commences at 2:00am on Sunday morning.
Paige Hareb is scheduled to surf tomorrow at 2:20am. The finals commence at approximately 5:00am.
