Ten things you need to know about the 2011 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship
Written by ISA
Friday, 13 May 2011

1. The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship is the biggest surfing event in the world for under-18 surfers, considering the surfing level, amount of competitors and participating countries. It is the pinnacle of the career of every junior surfer around the planet.

2. It is an “Olympic Style” event. Teams come to compete for medals and the honor of representing their nations. The excellence of competitive surfing reaches it highest level due to the athletes’ motivation as a result of defending their respective flags.

3. The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship is an annual event that started in 2003 in Durban, South Africa. The International Surfing Association decided to hold a separate event for the growing level and population of junior surfing. The decision proved to be right. Nowadays the desire of every junior surfer is to represent their country in this great contest.

The ISA started holding the Junior division in the ISA World Championship in 1980, and legendary surfer Tom Curren became the first ISA Junior Champion.

4. The 2011 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship is being held in Peru for the first time ever. The country was chosen among other candidate nations because of its fervent commitment to a better surfing future, a great and well-structured National Governing Body (the Peruvian Surfing Federation), a coast packed with consistent waves and also due to the promotion of surfing in this region.

5. Over 30 participating countries will be in Punta Hermosa’s waves of Caballeros and Señoritas. Powerhouse teams like Australia, USA, Hawaii, Brazil, France, South Africa and the host, Peru, will be looking for the gold in three individual divisions and in the overall team standings.

6. Over 250 team members and surfers will be competing in the event. In the history of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship a total of 1688 surfers have participated. The event started in 2003 with only 128 surfers.

7. The ninth edition of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship will be officially opened on May 21 at the Parque de Agua in Lima. The competition will start at 8:00am on the 22nd at Punta Hermosa.
