The Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team suffered several losses on day five of the 2008 ISA World Surfing Games with only four of the initial ten team members remaining in the event. Maz Quinn (Gis) was relegated into the repercharge rounds while Daisy Thomas (Chch) and Jessica Santorik (Rag) were both eliminated from the event along with the bodyboarders.
The 2008 ISA World Surfing Games are currently being held at Costa Da Caparica, Portugal with small 0.5-1.0m waves on offer on day five. The prestigious biennial event known as the Olympics of surfing takes place from the 11th – 19th of October – the finals taking place on Sunday night (New Zealand time).
Seven of the Quiksilver New Zealand team members were in action on day five and early on in the day things looked good with Zennor Wernham (Rag) winning his Repercharge Round 3 heat. Wernham again surfed all over his opponents from the start of the heat posting a 6.67 and 5.33 on his first two waves for an early lead. Wernham then rode a 6.00 point ride after ‘hugging’ the breakwater and catching some longer righthanders. Wernham finished with a score of 12.67 to progress alongside Swiss surfer Marc Walter.

Wernham moves through to Repercharge Round 4 where he will face Yoji Oseto (JPN), David Raimundo (POR) and Mark Harris (UK). Luke Cederman (Rag) has been waiting patiently to contest his fourth round heat and will face Dayyan Neve (AUS), Matthew Kruger (ZAF) and Rafael Pereira (VNZ). If successful both surfers could surf up to three times overnight Friday.
Maz Quinn placed fourth in his qualifying round 4 heat in a close battle for placings second through fourth. New Zealand Coach Cory Scott felt that the power moves of Quinn were underscored when he finished up last in the heat with a score of 11.70.
“Early on in the event all teams were informed that the judges would reward big turns with big scores” commented Scott. “Now it appears that the judges are rewarding surfers well for smaller turns on mass. This contradicts what we were told at the start of the event” added a frustrated Scott.
World Tour surfer Kai Otten (AUS) ran away with Quinn’s heat scoring 17.10 with fellow Australian Heath Joske placing second. Quinn will now wait for his opponents to be determined in repercharge round 6 is scheduled to take place late on day six.
Matched up together in the Open Women’s Division, Daisy Thomas (Chch) and Jessica Santorik (Rag found themselves finishing their heat in third and fourth place respectively and they were eliminated from the event. In a low scoring battle both surfers only needed 4.0 point rides to progress but could not find the tricky beach break waves to advance. Thomas finished 25th overall while Santorik finished 31st.

The men’s bodyboarders were also up against one another at the start of the day with Jarred Ferris (Gis) winning the heat to advance to the next round. Andrew Low (Blaketown) could not make it a Kiwi one-two however and placed third in the heat again requiring only a small score of 3.08 to progress. Low finished the event placing 25th overall.
Ferris went on to contest Repercharge Round 3 where he placed fourth in his heat to finish 22nd overall. It was another close heat for Ferris who finished with an 8.30 point heat score and only required a 4.24 point ride to progress to the next round.
Mihi Wells (Auck) placed second in her first heat of the day but was eliminated in the following repercharge round placing fourth. Wells finished the event placed 16th overall.
