Seven days of the best women’s surfing in the world will take off in Taranaki (NZ) again next year during the TSB Bank Women’s Surf Festival from April 25 to May 1, 2011.
The Festival will bring the top 17 women surfers in the world on the ASP Women’s Dream Tour to the region as well as New Zealand’s top female surfers competing in the New Zealand Women’s Open age group divisions and main event.
With the winner of the Open once again going through as a wildcard entry into the ASP event, it’s an extraordinary chance for a Kiwi to take on and possibly beat the world’s best, as young Sarah Mason did when she defeated world champion Stephanie Gilmore in her round 3 heat in the inaugural festival earlier this year.
Local Taranaki surfer, Paige Hareb, who is on the ASP Women’s World Tour, says the girls really enjoyed New Zealand’s first ever event of this kind in April.
“The girls thought it was one of the best events of the year,” says Paige. “It was so well run, it was just about the girls and we got some pretty good surf too.”
Paige also said the girls commented on the great community support and connection they felt—evident when ASP Dream Tour event winner Carissa Moore donated her US$15,000 prize money to the Waitara Bar Boardriders Club.
Hosted by Surfing Taranaki, the seven-day festival will once again include 20+ budding young champions from both Australia and New Zealand who will enter the Australasian Girls’ Pro Junior event, also a part of this ‘all girls’ surfing festival, says executive officer Craig Williamson.
“We are focusing on creating a celebration of women’s surfing, and this year it was absolutely wonderful to have so many competitors and volunteers involved, and then to see the public come out in force to witness a display of incredibly progressive surfing when Fitzroy beach turned on some quality waves for the finals day,” says Craig.
“We already have valued core funders on board, but we are also seeking some further significant sponsorship which is still needed in order to deliver all aspects of this festival successfully.”
Meanwhile, former 2 x national surfing champion Jason Matthews has confirmed he will again be contest director for the event in 2011.
