Red Beach surfer Thomas Kibblewhite made it two wins from two events at Fitzroy Beach, New Plymouth today (Sunday 17th February) winning the fourth event of the 2013 Hyundai Tour in blazing fashion.
Kibblewhite scored 17.37 in the final which comprised a 9.17 and an 8.2 which
left his fellow three competitors scratching for two waves to catch up in the
small 0.5m waves.
After missing the first two events of the year while on holiday in Canada,
Kibblewhite’s outlook on this year’s tour has changed.
“Straight off the snowboard onto the longboard and winning events, it has been
epic. I am way more relaxed than last
year, no more title pressure on my shoulders” said Kibblewhite who claimed his
first tour title in 2012.
He showed his class in the small waves that were completely the opposite of the
2.0m waves on offer at Sandy Bay at the last event. “There was the odd little wave with a wall
out there, I think we were lucky the surf gets bigger on the tide because it
was pretty small on the low” he added.
Kibblewhite’s win was made a little easier early in the final when number two
seed Daniel Procter (Gis) incurred a paddling interference taking himself out
of the picture. As the final panned out,
Procter’s performance would have only been enough for second place which
eventually went to Owen Barnes (WGM) who scored 13.67. Piha surfer Zen Wallis placed fourth in the
final.
The results over the weekend see Procter, by way of his third placing regain
the Hyundai Tour ratings lead over Ant McColl who finished fifth. The title looks like it will be down to
Procter and McColl at the final event to be held at Mount Maunganui on the 1-2
March.
Kibblewhite moved up the ratings from 17th to ninth but is out of
the running for tour title despite going for three straight wins at the
Mount. “Three is the plan for Mount
Maunganui, that’s the goal, whatever happens, happens. It is good training for later in the year”
said Kibblewhite who aims to compete in an Association of Surfing Professionals
(ASP) Longboard Qualifying event in Australia then one in Hawaii before he
competes as the sole Kiwi surfer in the ASP World Longboard Championship in
China later in the year.
Australian female Sam Suendermann finally rose to the top in the Women’s
Longboard Division after traversing the Tasman several times over the last few
years. Suendermann has been in the
country for the past three weeks surfing on both coastlines. She also competed at Sandy Bay where she
placed third in the final. Today despite
claiming she had a hard time in the final, Suendermann walked away with the win
scoring 11.0 points in the final.
“I had a hard time out there today paddling in between the two banks trying to
find waves, I didn’t really know where to sit but I got a few fun ones.” Suendermann heads back to Australia early
next week to attend university.
Placing second today was Mischa Davis (Piha) who reclaimed the number one
position on the ratings. Davis finished
ahead of local surfer Jo Moore in third place and Hannah Scott (Tara) in
fourth.
Paul Moretti (Mimiwhangata) dominated the Junior Longboard Division after an
early ding-dong battle with Jordan Griffin (Mnt). Moretti finished with a 13.27 point heat
total but had gone back and forth with Griffin for first place early on in the
final. Griffin finished with an 11.20
point heat total ahead of Joe Stewart (Ohope) and Scott Braithwaite (Whakatane)
who finished third and fourth respectively.
The sharpest of footwork from Craig Anderson (Mnt) saw him claim his second win
of the year in the Over 40 Longboard Division.
The two wins go with his third placing at Sandy Bay two weeks ago. Anderson combo’ed the field scoring 15.17
points in the final. Runner up was
previous ratings leader Guy Rencher (Mnt) who relinquishes his lead by a meagre
15 points. Justin Bambery placed third
in the final ahead of fourth placed Armie Armstrong (Rag).
Mark Hoyle (Orewa) was too good for Michael Thomsen (Rag) in the Over 50
Longboard Division taking out his second win in a row on the Hyundai Tour. Thomsen returned to the fold after missing
the Sandy Bay leg but it was Hoyle who posted a 13.17 point heat total for the
win. Thomsen finished with 10.07 points
for an easy second placing ahead of David Storck (Piha) in third and Bryan
Western (Orewa) in fourth.
It was four from four for Daniel Kereopa (Rag) as he claimed yet another title
in the Stand Up Paddleboard Division. Kereopa
was classy in the small waves throwing his personally shaped craft around with
ease. Kereopa finished with a 14.4 point
total to beat Karlos Aarsen (WGM).
Aarsen scored a 4.97 point ride on his last wave ridden in the dying
stages of the final to push Shayne Baxter (Chch) back into third place with
Armie Armstrong (Rag) finishing the final in fourth.
Armie Armstrong (Rag) took an easy win in the King of the Waves Stand Up
Paddleboard Race. After three laps of
the course that took paddlers through the Fitzroy break, Armstrong extended his
lead to 45 seconds for the most convincing win of the Hyundai Tour this
summer. Christchurch surfer Shayne
Baxter placed second in the race after a tight battle with third placed Jeremy
Stephenson (Auck). Winner of the long
distance race held on Saturday, Annabel Anderson (Auck), placed fourth in the
race after losing her board heading out through the surf on her second lap of
the course.

Overall the Hyundai Tour boasts $12,000 in
prize money which is boosted to $20,000 with another $8,000 distributed to boardrider
clubs and community groups at locations the tour frequents.
Hyundai have teamed up with Global Surf Industries and Starboard to provide
boards to raffle off at each event location.
All proceeds from this weekend’s raffles go back to the Taranaki Scholastic
Surfing Team.
