The Waiting Game – Maori Titles

Day 1 of the 2017 Aotearoa Maori Surfing Titles presented by Evitan Events was all about waiting for waves.  And unfortunately, they didn’t eventuate.

It was anticipated that the swell would build throughout the day and the tide would improve conditions.  However, after five hours of delays and only half a heat for the Under 14 Boys Division, it was decided that it was not contestable and the surfers were asked to come in.

Everyone gathered made the most of the Waitara Bar Boardriders Club facilities, rode the soft top boards, passed the rugby ball around and played guitars to pass time until the call was made to come back Sunday.

The swell is expected to increase on Sunday and a full day of surfing is required to complete the event.  Action will kick off at 8am in the morning and run through until late afternoon before finishing off at Owae Marae.
